The experience of being immersed in different bodies of water is explored through repetition and variation. The series depicts three elements — the sea, horizon, and sky. Though similar in composition, each photograph represents a unique locale, and a corresponding difference in personal and historical significance.
Each sea is imbued with a sense of its place in history, former uses, and past explorers. The immersion into the water brings a feel for each sea’s texture, movement and temperature. The ocean is a place where your ego must step aside. You cannot help but feel small, in the same way you do when staring up at a sky full of stars for too long. This notion of the sea as timeless and interconnected is juxtaposed with singular and unique experiences of each sea at a particular moment. The images reflect and explore this dichotomy.
At the same time that each sea caries with it a combination of personal and historical forces. Each sea is approached at a different moment in time that exists on a continuous spectrum. The random abstraction of wave patterns, stochastic resonance best reflect this issue of inevitability. The waves crash on their own accord. My immersion into the water is meant to capture these moments as a swimmer would see.
